- Start with a group linkup in a busy public place, like a walking tour, food market or bar crawl.
- Share your plans with someone back home, including where you’re staying and who you’re meeting.
- Keep your accommodation address to yourself until you really know someone.
- Save local emergency numbers in your phone. They’re not the same everywhere.
- Arrange your own transport, and know how you’re getting back before you go out.
- Keep your passport and cards safe, and don’t carry more cash than you need.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.
